Occult Osseous Lesions Associated with Acute Knee Injury (Assessment by Magnetic Resonance Imaging after Acute Knee Injury)

Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging is more reliable as diagnotutic method for knee joint injury. Recent introduction of MRI for diagnosis of cute knee joint injury resulted in not only clear detection of ligament & meniscal injury but also occult osseous
which
was, in past with conventional X-ray, almost impossible to detect.
Furthermore due to such high sensitivity of MRI, now it became very obscure in dertermining diagnosis and treatment plan, and in addition if imposed on possible legal problem.
The subjects were 33 randomly selected patients associated with acute knee injuries and who underwent MRI within 3 weeks after trauma between March. 1993 and May 1994 at the Guro Hospital,
@ES The analyzed results are summarized as follows:
@EN 1. There were 30 men and 3 women, with mean age 42.3 year ranging from 17 to 71 years.
2. Occult osseous lesions were found on lateral femoral condyle in 7 cases, medial femoral condyle in 4, proximal tibial condyle in 15, fibular head in 4.
3. Using the concepts of Lynch et. Al, type 1 lesions were 22 cases and type 2 lesions in 4 cases.
4. occult osseous lesions which were not detected by simple roentgenography were revealed by MRI in 26 cases(76.4%)
5. Type 2 lesion(involve cortical breakage) should be used as the atandard for diagnosis and treatment plan.
